The lottery is very vintage indeed. although before we go into the history of the lottery I should explain where the name originates. It arises from a Dutch word (loterij) which means fate.
The nationwide Lottery in Britain may have only started in the mid 1990s but Britain has been having lotteries since Queen Elizabeth I as far back as 1567.
Then in 1612 King James I utilised lottery cash to help construct the first British colony in America at Jamestown in Virginia. In detail there is clues to propose lotteries may have lived in Britain as far back as the Roman occupation.
The Euromillions draw may be one of the large-scale lotteries in the world now but it is not Europe's first lottery. The first lottery suggested rewards of paintings by Jan Van Eyck and was held in 1446.
Canals, lodgings and many other city construction projects were paid for in 1465 in Belgium by proceeds from lotteries.
Italy first lottery is noted to have been held in Florence in 1530 with money for prizes. Then in 1539 France held a lottery to try to cover the countries increasing liability.
Th Netherlands have a national lottery that designated days back to 1726 and has stayed largely unchanged all through the centuries.
ceramic has been having lotteries for millennia and there is a large body of clues that displays lotteries being held in 200 BC. The advances of some of these lotteries were used by the Chinese to pay for the construction of The large Wall.
We can work out that the lottery is way older than this though!
It is accepted that lotteries designated day back as far as early Biblical times. The Book of figures apparently indicates that Moses was bestowed land from a lottery win.
